Consultative Meeting on Expansion of the Weheliye Digital Safety App

On July 18, 2024, the Somali Women Journalists Rights Association (SOWJRA) held a pivotal consultative meeting at the SYL Hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia, to discuss the expansion of the Weheliye App. Originally designed to provide digital safety resources for Somali women journalists, this innovative app aims to empower women navigating the increasingly complex online world.

Now, with support from the Africa Online Safety Fund, SOWJRA is broadening the app’s scope to support all Somali women aged 21–65. This expansion focuses on addressing online harassment and cyber threats by introducing more resources, translating content into Somali, and improving accessibility.

Key Highlights from the Meeting

The consultative meeting brought together 53 participants, including representatives from women-led organizations, digital rights groups, internet service providers, civil society, government ministries, and independent digital security experts.

Discussions on Digital Challenges

Participants shared firsthand accounts of online harassment, cyberbullying, data breaches, and mobile money scams, highlighting the vulnerabilities women face in digital spaces. Public figures such as journalists and influencers have been especially targeted, often facing intimidation and defamation.

Enhancing the Weheliye App

While the app’s existing resources—like tips for social media security and help lines—were commended, attendees proposed several improvements, including:

  • Adding explanations on why women are targeted online.
  • Including advice on avoiding mobile money scams.
  • Incorporating explainer videos for better usability.
  • Ensuring accessibility via Google Play and the iPhone Store.
  • Launching awareness campaigns to promote the app and educate women about digital safety.

A Path Forward

The meeting emphasized the urgent need for:

  1. Nationwide Awareness Campaigns: Educating women about online harassment and digital risks.
  2. Policy Advocacy: Urging the Somali government to establish cybercrime laws and privacy protections.
  3. Collaborative Efforts: Strengthening partnerships among stakeholders to promote digital safety for women.

The Weheliye App has the potential to become a groundbreaking tool for Somali women, enabling them to reclaim their online spaces with confidence and security.

Next Steps

SOWJRA is committed to integrating the feedback from this meeting into the updated version of the app and continuing its mission to advocate for the digital rights of Somali women.

Let’s work together to create a safer, more inclusive digital world for Somali women.
